Last 15 days of monitoring Osteopsis wadding ARPA Puglia __Monitoring season__: June - September __Monitoring frequency__: fortnightly - first fortnight: 1st day to 15th day of the month - second fortnight: 16th day at the end of the month ARPA Puglia for more than a decade has been monitoring the qualitative and quantitative presence of the dinoflagellated microalgae Ostreopsis ovata, a potentially toxic species, in Apulian marine-coastal waters. The Agency monitors constantly from June to September – with a fortnightly frequency of 20 sites distributed throughout the region and representative of the coastal typology potentially affected by the presence of the species. Monitoring for Ostreopsis ovata involves taking samples at each station both at immediate contact with the seabed (bottom sample) and in the water column (column sample) and, when the species is present, estimating the respective cell densities. If the limit of 30,000 cells/litre in a water column is exceeded due to the occurrence of a possible health risk, a limit indicated by the Guidelines published by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità in 2014 (ISTISAN 14/19 Reports) and recognized by the Ministerial Decree of 19 April 2018, ARPA Puglia communicates the information to the competent institutions (Region, ASL and Municipality of territorial competence) for any measures to be taken. The most up-to-date data (last fortnight of the month) on Ostreopsis ovata abundances (density expressed in cells/l) for water column samples are collected in the dataset. Ostreopsis ovata abundance classes in water column are defined on the basis of the density ranges reported in the resource “Table of density ranges relative to abundance classes.pdf”
