More ambitious climate targets by 2020
Description
To achieve the 2 °C target, more ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets for 2020 will be discussed than foreseen in the EU climate and energy package. For Austria, on the basis of energy and greenhouse gas scenarios for 2020, the Federal Environment Agency identified possible measures to achieve more ambitious targets and compared them with avoidance costs from literature. In the Effort sharing sector, a national reduction of minus 25 % compared to 2005 is possible by 2020. The reduction potential consists, for the most part, of a further reduction in fuel exports in transport and other measures in the agricultural, industrial (NON-ETS) and space heating sectors. On the basis of the new allocation rules, it has been estimated that about 80 % of emissions from 2013-2020 are covered by free allowances for Austrian industrial companies.
