Emission behaviour of SUVs - Sport Utility Vehicles
Description
For years, new registrations of SUVs and off-road vehicles have been rising sharply. The higher vehicle weight compared to cars requires the use of a stronger engine, which has an impact on the emission behavior. Due to the now significant fleet share, an investigation was carried out to assess the emission behaviour of SUVs under real driving conditions. Measurement data from six SUVs of the emission classes EURO 3 and EURO 4 show that significantly higher consumption values and thus higher CO2 emissions occur compared to conventional passenger cars. In terms of air pollutants, the NOx emissions of diesel-powered SUVs are particularly relevant. These NOx emissions – and in particular the NO2 share – are at or above the level of modern EURO 5 articulated vehicles at higher speeds in motorway traffic.
