In formulating its own defence concept, the Republic of Slovenia also defined the concept of the formation of armed forces. As in all modern countries, the armed forces are one of the elements of ensuring national security. The course of events in the independence of Slovenia led to a direct, empirical verification of the effectiveness of its defence system. The intervention of the Yugoslav Armed Forces (JA) has greatly emphasized and strengthened defence mechanisms, especially territorial defence and police. In certain circumstances, the willingness of these mechanisms to operate effectively has proven to be one of the most important elements for achieving policy objectives. The engagement of the Slovenian territorial defence in the armed conflict with the JA requires special attention in the context of the mentioned field of research. Exploring the functioning of territorial defence during conflicts offers opportunities to study certain aspects of the functioning of a military organization that would not be possible under normal circumstances. Such a study would, in other circumstances, only remain at the level of empirically unconfirmed hypotheses and simulations. The specific situation, i.e. the operation in an actual combat situation, is an unrepeatable framework for the empirical analysis of the operation of a military organisation. This is not only about analysing the past situation, but also about establishing legality, which is a valuable basis for the formation and operation of a military organisation in the future. In our research, we focused on the study of the role of a man soldier at the level of an individual and a military collective in situations of armed struggle or war. We paid a lot of attention to researching some of the most important quality characteristics of a Slovenian soldier. Accordingly, we defined as the subject of the research the behavior of members of the Territorial Defence (TO) during armed conflicts, their values and their opinions and positions on security and military-defence issues, formed on the basis of war experience. When selecting the indicators, we were particularly attentive, as our intention was to capture both positive and negative empirical experiences that might need to be built into the development of the Slovenian armed forces.
