Description

The special topic of the survey was the awareness and attitudes of the people towards the proposal for a new republican constitution. The first set of questions relates to the social crisis and reform. Confidence in the ability of the government to solve the crisis, views on the need to reduce income disparities, on the dilemma of halting the rise of inflation or unemployment are recorded. Respondents assess the mood of people in times of crisis, what would be the most appropriate way to solve problems, and judge individual views that would help to exit the crisis. The chapter on positions in relation to the amendment of the Slovenian Constitution begins with questions about knowledge of the Constitution, knowledge of the amendments and the necessity of the amendments themselves. Below is a record of the degree of agreement with individual constitutional amendments concerning solutions relating to the function of municipalities and the powers of the Republic, familiarity with the internal political order in Slovenia, electoral procedures and the opinion on their appropriateness, and an assessment of the necessity of calling a referendum. We continue with the Slovenian translation of the international questionnaire ISSP85 Role of the State, which is partly repeated in ISSP96 and ISSP90 (see also ADP - IDNo: ISSPSJ89) or ADP-IDNo related research: SJM954 covers views on the tasks of the government in specific areas. The respondents assess the importance of individual types of human rights for themselves personally and whether they are sufficiently protected in Yugoslavia, they assess the most important constitutional amendments concerning the inviolability of housing, the profession of religion, the death penalty, the right to act of political associations and organisations, Slovenian sovereignty. They are given an assessment of individual economic measures that could be adopted by the government, what impact the state should have in individual economic areas and which social areas the state is responsible for the functioning of. A separate chapter is devoted to human rights. Respondents take a position on the appropriateness of each method of punishment, the right of the state to prevent the publication of confidential documents, the extent to which individual protest actions and actions should be allowed, and assess the justification of individual police measures in the event of suspicion of a criminal offence. The questions on socio-political organisations include opinions on the influence of citizens, the public on power and politics, the role of the SZDL, new political alliances, assessments of which political organisation will have the greatest importance in the future, opinions on the consistency of UK policy with the interests of the majority and a comparison of UK leadership policy with leadership policy years ago, the importance of the UK and its role in the past and future of society, the reputation of the UK among people. Questions on international relations begin with a standard scale of ethnic distance, how closely we would be willing to connect with members of individual Yugoslav nations, opinions on relations between peoples and nationalities in the Slovenian and Yugoslav areas and what relations will be in the future, the classification of countries or groups of countries with which Slovenia should connect in the future, and questions related to Slovenian sovereignty: Slovenian politics is sufficiently independent, the right to secession, Slovenia's possibilities outside Yugoslavia, an assessment of its own response to a possible violent change of Slovenian political leadership. The remaining questions on international relations call for an opinion on crisis events outside Slovenia: assessment of the crisis in Kosovo, hunger strike of miners, cooperation of Slovenian militias and soldiers in maintaining the state of emergency in Kosovo. Respondents choose Slovenian politicians, who have the greatest reputation among the people, and Yugoslav politics, whose ideas are unacceptable, assess what foreign policy would be most suitable for Yugoslavia, the position regarding the introduction of civilian military service, the observance of conscientious objection during the prolongation of military service, the usefulness of military service in the mother Republic, the anti-arms mood, the possibility of the military taking power. Here are my thoughts on current events: various ways of threatening Slovenian sovereignty, the functioning of the Committee for the Protection of Human Rights, the JBTZ process. Demographic issues include gender, age, marital status, ethnicity, household size, basic source of household income, employment status, qualification and position in the workplace, education, membership in socio-political organisations, religion, father's profession, class (self-classification), material position (possession of movable property and objects of general use), municipality, settlement size and type of local community.
