Slovenian public opinion 1968

Description

The SJM 68 survey is the first in the Slovenian Public Opinion series. The questionnaire was divided into thematic areas. Many questions are aimed at assessing the effectiveness of the socialist economy, its shortcomings, people evaluate the perspectives of the economy, compare the social and private sectors. Current reforms, social policy, pensions, health are assessed. A special section is devoted to the relationship between the Yugoslav republics and the problem of migration: opinions on the reasons for going abroad and possible reputational damage to Yugoslavia due to the migration of citizens. In the section dedicated to the assessment of internal politics, respondents cite the politics that has the highest reputation among the people, favor the policies of the Union of Communists and opinions regarding the criteria for admission to it, assess the influence and functioning of social groups and bodies in favor of general interests, and express their views on elections. In the section relating to Yugoslav foreign policy, we find the reference to the policy most deserving of world peace, the opinion on the most appropriate foreign policy orientation of Yugoslavia and the set of countries with which Yugoslavia should have the best relations. Respondents compare 10 countries (including Yugoslavia) or groups of countries according to the possibilities of promotion, education, their economy, relations between people, etc. Four questions are also intended for military defence in general, among them the opinion on the service of the army of Slovenian soldiers at home. In the next section, respondents state the reasons for social differences, assess the reputation of individual occupations and assess the adequacy of income levels for individual occupations. The penultimate section is dedicated to the media. The questions relate to the frequency of media monitoring (TV, radio and printed media - with some individual references) and the languages in which respondents monitor these media and the most common source of information about important events. In the last part, respondents were asked about religion and the function that the Church should have in society. Respondents answered the question whether they would (have already) donated blood and whether they would donate a heart or some other organ in case of death. Demographic issues include membership/activity in political organisations, societies and other bodies, gender, age, marital status, qualification and position at work, father's qualification, nationality, self-assessment of material status, basic source of household income and education.
