Propaganda in the War

Description

The purpose of the survey of the ORC Task Force in cooperation with the Swedish National Committee on Psychological Defence was to analyse the formulation of content messages in mass media and to learn about the proportionality of the news schedule on Croatian and Serbian TV shows, with the desire to find out how propaganda messages report on the state of war. To find out the effect of propaganda (such as: monopoly on information, pressure from the state on independent media, restrictive legislation, complete control of the design of topics in public stands and debates) focused on measuring the compatibility of verbal and visual information, based on the fact that the provision of information in the media is very stereotyped and “not compatible”, which provokes a certain prior view of the whole situation. The aim was, therefore, to examine whether it was the true fundamental objective of the propagandists to simplify the image of war and thus make it more understandable to everyday people, and whether they use the inherent discourse in which they report on the state of war. The analysis of Croatian and Serbian television programmes and their role in the formation of national feelings and collective consciousness should help to understand the fact that both televisions are actually limited in the world of symbolism used, how much it is possible to understand the context of the social environment without the use of publicist language. Therefore, the authors focused on the issue of “political culture” as a determinant of the audience, which is a means of propaganda to achieve the objective; the reach of mass media is largely dependent on political culture, but on the other hand, mass media is one of the socialisation factors that greatly influence the development of political culture. As objects of analysis in various cases and contexts, keywords are linked to certain situations (i.e. newspaper, time, war state, etc.), so some of them are given at a very descriptive level.
