Migration in journalistic reporting, 2020

Description

The research examines the incidence and reproduction of populist and affective communication in the interpretative genre of newspaper commentary (i.e. critical publication) of two selected daily newspapers, Delo and Slovenski novice, during the period of migration change. and refugee legislation in Slovenia (covering the period from 2015 to 2019; the press articles (comments) used for the analysis refer to the period from 2015 to 2017. With the help of the method of framing newspaper comments in selected two newspapers, the research group determined the frames by which journalists define phenomena as social in their texts. problems and within which they implicitly or explicitly include or offer solutions. The final sample of analysis is limited only to those newspaper comments that contain a structured and meaningful pair in their argumentation: Explicit definition of the problem and explicitly proposed solution of the defined problem. Structured frames containing a couple of problems (diagnosis) - the solution (prognosis) identified by the research team in the texts are thus fundamental units of analysis. Framing analysis within the communicative framing process presupposes and enables the perception of certain non-linguistic or non-cognitive properties of framed problems and solutions in the analyzed texts. This is the research group. in the texts, to all frames, i.e. to all couples, also defined affections that are randomly or purposefully clamped and intertwined with meanings and attitudes in the texts, while both frames and affections were connected in the texts with three populist antagonisms, which They cover the topic of migration: anti-elitism, people-centeredness, otherness. Due to the specific way of spreading populist antagonisms in the media, media populism in each pair (problem-solution) is encoded on two levels, (1) as populism through the media and (2) as populism by the media. Media populism is characterised by the presence of three populist antagonisms voiced by external voices (e.g. politicians) on which journalists rely, thus dimensioning the phenomenon three variables: anti-elitism, people-centeredness, otherness. Media populism refers to journalists as actors actively reproducing populist communication, as those who treat populism only thematically or as actors who label others as populists. The three-dimensional phenomenon is operationalized by means of five variables: anti-elitism, people-centeredness, otherness, populism as a phenomenon, populist actor.
