Economic importance of ecosystem services

The achievements of nature form the basis for our quality of life. In order to ensure a sustainable use of nature, the social (cost) awareness for these ecosystem services must be sharpened and incorporated into political decisions. The Federal Environment Agency presents various methods for the monetary assessment of ecosystem services and deals with the associated risks and potentials. Monetary values can be an additional argument in decision-making processes. However, the appreciation of nature encompasses the entirety of all services – including those that cannot be valued in monetary terms. Depending on the question, a holistic assessment of ecosystem services is ideally an interplay of several complementary processes (qualitative, quantitative, economic evaluation).
