Description
The data set of monthly average vegetation indices of NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) for the month of February 2008, from the study of Monitoring the Annual Evolution of Crops and Harvests contains the maps with the vegetation index with the average value of the month of February of the year 2008 for the entire area of the regions studied.
To obtain the results, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment (MAPAMA) has a system for monitoring the evolution of rainfed crops and grasslands, based mainly on the information provided by vegetation indices (NDVI) generated with daily satellite images NOAA-AVHRR. This system, which has been in operation since 1993, pays special attention to the detection and localization of drought situations throughout successive agricultural years, in order to provide for the necessary measures to be taken to mitigate its effects. The system is in operation between the months of January and June, the period in which the studied crops are developed.
The study is carried out in the autonomous communities of Navarra, Aragón, Cataluña, Castilla y León, La Rioja, Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha, Comunidad Valenciana, Andalucía, Región Murciana , Extremadura and Baleares, since they are the ones that practically cover all the rain-fed crops and grasslands.
