Geological and soil surveys on the new construction and extension of cemeteries
Description
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the Geological Service of North Rhine-Westphalia is responsible for all geological and soil studies required for permits for new plants or extensions of cemeteries. As a public authority, he is already involved in land use planning and draws up reports on the basic suitability of an area for burial purposes. According to the North Rhine-Westphalian hygiene guidelines, these reports are a mandatory requirement for the approval of cemetery areas. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the requirements for soil quality, water conditions and burial sites are laid down in the hygiene guidelines. It must be ensured that - through cemeteries there is no damage or harm to human health or well-being. - the soil meets the characteristics required for decomposition. - groundwater and surface water cannot be contaminated by decomposition products or pathogens. The Geological Service evaluates relevant geoscientific data of the planned areas in advance and examines the soil and water conditions in excavations. So far, more than 2,500 reports have gathered experience and suggested solutions. The Geological Service for Geological and Soil Studies is also the competent partner for the installation of burial chamber systems, the new construction of urn fields or small animal burial places as well as for applications for a shortened rest period.
