It is important to monitor the evolution of groundwater levels for several reasons, including:
the impact of groundwater extraction on the phreatic and sealed aquifers and thus the availability of groundwater;
the impact of weather and climate on the phreatic groundwater level;
the relationship between the groundwater level on the one hand and, in particular, groundwater-dependent ecosystems and basic nutrition of surface water on the other.
