Description

The Balkans have been hit by the most severe floods in more than 120 years. According to the Federal Foreign Office, more than one million people in Bosnia and Herzegovina alone are affected by the effects of the floods. The map shows the water extent of the river Sava in the area of Orašje, where several dam breaks have occurred. The water masks were derived from a SPOT6 satellite image scene from 24.5.2014 (recording time 09:29 UTC) and a TerraSAR-X satellite image scene from 26.5.2014 (recording time 05:01 UTC). In addition, a change analysis of the water surface was carried out between 25.5.2014 (based on Radarsat-2 data) and 26.05.2014. The altered areas are marked as water increase/decrease. The SPOT6 scene has a spatial resolution of 1.5 m, and the TerraSAR-X scene has a spatial resolution of 2.75 m.Landsat data (recording time 6.5.2014) with a spatial resolution of 15 m serve as a background image. Please note that the flood situation in urban areas, under vegetation cover and in areas with steep gradients may not be fully captured due to radar geometry.
