Selected cork oak groves in Andalusia
Description
The Ministry has been developing since 1995 a broad line of work aimed at improving the cork oak forest and the development of the Andalusian cork sector in general, which appears channeled in SACA (Alcornocal and Cork Service in Andalusia). The delimitation of selected stands responds to a series of criteria for the selection of cork oak stands set out in Royal Decree 289/2003 of 7 March 2003 and ensures that seed (forest reproductive material) of known origin and quality is obtained. To establish these stands, the mountain must be included in the cove plan of the current year, since one of the selection criteria is that the quality of the cork is above the average quality of the region of origin to which the cork-cutting area belongs. From the beginning of SACA's activity to the present, up to 678 field visits have been carried out, between the months of October and December, in order to study the possibility of establishing a select stand. The stands already established are periodically reviewed following the indications of the aforementioned Royal Decree, with the aim of verifying their category and issuing a report on their current status. For the control of these stands there is a national register in the NATIONAL CATALOGUE OF BASIC MATERIAL.
Currently there are 54 selected stands of cork oak, published in the National Catalogue, throughout the Andalusian territory.
