The designation has been implemented in Danish legislation by Order No 408 of 1 May 2007 on the designation and administration of international nature protection areas and the protection of certain species, as amended.
A Community bird protection area is one of three types of international nature protection area: EC Bird Protection Areas, EC Habitats Areas and Ramsar Areas. The first two are collectively referred to as Natura 2000 sites. The habitats of many bird species are deteriorating or are directly threatened. Bird protection areas help maintain and secure habitats. In Denmark, the areas are especially important for many waterfowl. Each area has been designated to protect certain bird species. The basis for the sites is the 1979 Birds Directive, which aims to protect and improve the conditions for wild bird species in the EU. This is done, among other things, by the Member States establishing bird protection areas. The Directive also regulates which species of birds may be hunted and which hunting methods may be used.
