NG GL Conservation-friendly management on permanent grassland
Description
Council Directive 2009/147/EC on the conservation of wild birds (EU Birds Directive) obliges the Land of Lower Saxony to maintain the habitats of bird species protected in Annex I and Article 4(2) on a permanent basis. The protected species cover the species found in Lower Saxony: Nun goose, as well as the dwarf goose as defined in Annex I and Ringelgans, Saatgans, Wind Goose, Short-beaked Goose and Grey Goose, as well as Höckerschwan, Dwarf Swan, Singschwan and Pipers in accordance with Article 4(2) of the EU Birds Directive. Lower Saxony has notified the EU Commission of EU bird protection areas with an area of approximately 125.000 ha, in which, among other things, Nordic host bird species are value-determining. The Land of Lower Saxony is currently seeking to transfer to permanent grassland the method laid down in the Eligibility Directive for Nordic Guest Birds — Arables (Noga arables) for the reduction of yield losses caused by peak peaks of Nordic guest birds on agricultural land. Managers have the possibility to compensate for the large damage events (rest peaks) caused by resting and wintering Nordic guest birds as a result of sowing on permanent grassland and the resulting high yield losses. The model developed by the Lower Saxony Chamber of Agriculture is currently being tested for estimating loss of earnings in the present setting.
