NG GL Conservation-friendly management on permanent grassland
Description
Under Council Directive 2009/147/EC on the conservation of wild birds (EU Birds Directive), the Land of Lower Saxony is required to maintain permanently the habitats of the bird species protected in Annex I and Article 4(2). The protected species include the species found in Lower Saxony: Nun goose as well as the dwarf goose listed in Annex I and ringed goose, seed goose, white-fronted goose, short-beaked goose and grey goose as well as humpback swan, dwarf swan, song swan and pipe duck in accordance with Article 4(2) of the EU Birds Directive. Lower Saxony has notified the EU Commission of EU bird protection areas with an area of approximately 125,000 ha, in which, among other things, Nordic guest bird species are value-determining. The Land of Lower Saxony is currently striving to transfer the procedure laid down in the equity directive Nordic guest birds - arable land (noGa arable land) for the reduction of yield losses caused by resting tips of Nordic guest birds on agricultural arable land to permanent grassland. Farmers have the opportunity to compensate proportionally for the major damage events caused by resting and wintering Nordic guest birds as a result of aging on permanent grassland (rest peaks) and the associated high yield losses. The model developed by the Lower Saxony Chamber of Agriculture for estimating yield losses is currently being tested in the present setting.
