Description
In the Middle Ages, the Netherlands was rapidly deforested and by 1650 there was almost no forest left. The map 'historical mentions' shows where the last forests were, at least the forests that we know from historical writings. And the map 'forest-place names' shows the location of places and hamlets whose medieval name refers to forest. In the Middle Ages a lot of forest had already disappeared, but in these places there was still forest when the settlements were created. Different types of forest names indicate different types of medieval forest. There are regional differences.
