Description
Fresh surface water is used for a number of purposes, including flushing the regional water system. Flushing. In the west of the Netherlands in particular, fresh water is also needed to prevent the water in the regional system from becoming too salty. The salt water is supplied from the subsoil in these areas (salt seepage). By always mixing it with sufficient fresh water (by rinsing ditches), the surface water does not become too salty to be used for irrigation. Incidentally, water in the main water system is also used to prevent the salt tongue from advancing too far inland from the sea and thus threatening the inlet points of fresh water. This is achieved by a minimum flow rate in the main water system.
For this water demand, the ‘Delta programme for fresh water’ has determined the total amount of water that can be supplied and the final shortage of fresh water for this purpose. The results can be presented for 5 sub-areas in which the Netherlands is divided into the sums that DP Freshwater has commissioned.
