Description
The map shows the snow depths (in cm) at selected measuring points in the districts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, Miesbach, Traunstein and Berchtesgadener Land in the period from 08.01.2019 to 20.01.2019. The peak of the extreme snowfalls was reached around 11.01.2019.Since 5 January 2019, extreme snowfalls in the entire foothills of the Alps have led to a tense situation. In the five highlighted Bavarian districts, therefore, the disaster was declared. The severe snowfalls led to heavy snow loads, snow drifts and increased avalanche exits. Overall, there were disruptions in traffic and the provision of utilities, as well as isolations of individual communities and long-term school dropouts. The emergency services on site were busy securing buildings, clearing traffic routes and maintaining food. The danger situations were dealt with at the level of the districts with the nationwide support of the fire brigade, the federal police and the Bundeswehr as well as forces of the THW, the BRK and the DLRG.
