Project CAMP Levante de Almería. Integrated Coastal Zone Management
Description
The CAMP Levante de Almería is a project that, following a methodology established by the United Nations, seeks to promote in this stretch of the coast a change of the management model, putting into practice in a pioneering way the Integrated Management of Coastal Zones.
Its main result has been the elaboration of a strategic document, the Reference Framework for the Sustainable Development of the Levante de Almería, with a 'bottom-up' methodology, that is, through processes of citizen participation and institutional coordination. For this, the CAMP Levante de Almería has established two citizen participation bodies (Littoral Council and Coastal Forum) and an institutional coordination body (Littoral Commission), which through a participatory process known as 'Imagine' have discussed the sustainability problems of the Levante de Almería, the necessary indicators to measure them, the desirable future scenarios and the necessary measures to achieve them. To achieve its final result, CAMP Levante de Almería has been carrying out a series of horizontal activities in parallel, over more than two years: Training and capacity-building, awareness-raising for coastal sustainability, information and actions to promote institutional coordination and social participation; and six unique projects related to the key areas for the sustainability of this coastal section, identified in the initial stages of the CAMP: Sustainable management of the water cycle, Sustainable use of the marine environment, Dissemination of good practices in productive activities, Valuation of the territory, Conservation of cultural heritage and Improvement of the maritime terrestrial and hydraulic public domain. The tasks developed in the unique projects have been the responsibility of a consultant (Team Manager) hired for that purpose, who has relied on a team of scientific and technical experts of recognized prestige in each subject. The results of each unique project and of the horizontal activities, together with the proposals arising from the Imagine Workshops, have been the subject of a work of integration and analysis of the economic, social, environmental and technical viability that has resulted in the Sustainable Development Reference Framework, the final integrated document of the project.
