Ecosystem monitoring for the EU NEC Directive in Austria.
Description
Sulfur and nitrogen inputs as well as ground-level ozone can have a negative impact on ecosystems. These effects must be monitored by the EU Member States in accordance with the National Emissions Ceiling Directive (NEC-RL). In Austria, several monitoring systems are used, which have been combined for NEC monitoring. Measured values are collected for air pollutants, especially nitrogen, and their effects on soil, vegetation and water. The selected measuring points for water bodies, natural and semi-natural meadows, bogs and forest ecosystems cover the risk of egative effects due to nitrogen inputs well. The 2019 and 2023 reports show more than half of the NEC Directive's priority parameters for forest and water sites. Monitoring at the measuring sites for meadows and bogs is less comprehensive, and the range of measurements for ecosystem damage caused by ozone is low.
