The "new cyclists" What are the motivations for cycling during the health crisis?

Description

The coronavirus crisis and its various periods of confinement have largely impacted our lives, forcing us to stay at home and limit our travels as much as possible. As a result, a cycling-friendly environment was created. in place: reduction of car traffic, avoidance of promiscuity induced by public transport, need to play sports after a long period of immobility, installation of new infrastructure, etc. and Indeed, many people in Brussels got into the saddle after the covid: +44% of cyclists on Brussels roads at rush hour between 2021 and 20221 and 39% of users on cycle paths over the whole period 2021-20222. The objective of this survey is not so much to assess the saddling of Brussels residents since the covid, but rather analyse the motivations that may have led non-cyclists to take the handlebars, as well as the continuation of this new practice in time. This is why it was decided to conduct a longitudinal survey (3 waves of surveys: 2022, 2023 and 2024) in order to follow the new Brussels cyclists in their practice of bike. For this survey, we interviewed 220 respondents in 2022, followed by those same people in 2023 (N=179). and one more time in 2024 (N=158), for a drop-out rate of 28%.
