Description
Map 1.4 shows the ground cover. Each part of the earth’s surface is characterised by a certain type of soil cover. This can range from completely sealed settlement and traffic areas to marshes, salt marshes and open sea areas. By far the largest proportion in Germany accounts for agricultural land and forest areas. Vegetation is thus of paramount importance for soil cover and its effectiveness on hydrological and ecological processes.
Since the end of the 1980s, the European Union (EU) has developed a Europe-wide harmonised classification rule (TECHNICAL GUIDE 1994) and a method for soil cover data collection within the CORINE programme (Coordination of INformation on the Environment) which took into account environmental policy requirements. The collection of data for Germany carried out by the Federal Statistical Office was based on the environmental research plan of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and
Reactor safety (BMU) and the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) as well as funded by the EU.
