Site suitability for the disposal of carcasses in disease trains 1 : 50 000
Description
In the event of an outbreak of disease trains, e.g. avian influenza in Lower Saxony, the provision of land for the mass disposal of animal carcasses becomes indispensable. The following requirements must be met: as low a load as possible on groundwater and surface water, as complete and rapid decomposition as possible and as little odour nuisance as possible. These objectives cannot all be achieved at the same time and to the same extent. In principle, two options are possible: Variant 1 decomposition option" and variant 2 "barrier option".
Decomposition option: The sites ensure as fast and complete mineralization as possible and have a long residence time of leachate in the soil body. Risks to groundwater cannot be completely ruled out.
Barrier option: The sites ensure the protection of groundwater through a barrier effect of the sites. Due to the poorer ventilation, a longer and more incomplete decomposition must be accepted. In addition, there may be temporary leachate accumulation.
