Data from the EMNAT 2018 foresight campaign and the DEMO 2017-2018 demonstration study

The 2018 monitoring campaign for substances of emerging interest in surface waters (continental and coastal) and discharge waters (sewage treatment plant discharge waters and liquid sludge – STEU) known as ‘Emerging Nationals 2018’ or EMNAT 2018, conducted as part of the Prospective Monitoring Network for Chemical Quality in Aquatic Environments, provided unprecedented data for the priority-setting exercise for substances of emerging interest that was carried out in 2020 (https://www.ineris.fr/en/campaign-emergents-nationals-2018-emnat-2018-results-research-contaminants-emergents-waters). The purpose of this exercise is to update the amended Order of 25 January 2010 establishing the water status monitoring programme and more specifically the list of relevant substances to be monitored (SPAS) in the context of future WFD monitoring programmes, which will be implemented in the next water body management cycle (2022). This campaign, led by Ineris, collected data on 53 substances of emerging interest (36 biocides and 17 surfactants selected by the Priorisation Committee of Experts) in surface waters, sediments, suspended solids, waste water and sludge from STEU in metropolitan France and in the overseas departments and regions (DROM). Link to the report: https://professionals.ofb.fr/sites/default/files/pdf/documentation/Pollution/LotA_v3.pdf Supported by this campaign, a non-targeted analysis fingerprinting (NTS) action was implemented between 2018 and 2019 (Togola et al., 2020, https://professionnels.ofb.fr/sites/default/files/pdf/documentation/Pollution/LotC_3.pdf) Conducted in 2017 and 2018, the ‘DEMO’ demonstration study aimed to assess the relevance of three types of passive integrative samplers (PIS) for the chemical monitoring of many regulated substances in aquatic environments (Mathon et al., 2022, https://professionnels.ofb.fr/sites/default/files/pdf/documentation/Pollution/Rapport_RSP_Lot_E_V2022.pdf). 20 sites from the Aquatic Chemical Quality Prospective Monitoring Network were selected for this purpose. The PIEs studied were DGT (Diffusive Gradients in Thin Films) for metals, POCIS (Polar Organic Chemical Integrative sampler) for semi-polar organic contaminants and silicone membranes or SR (Silicone Rubber) for apolar organic contaminants. In synergy with this evaluation work, a study was carried out to demonstrate the applicability and performance of bioanalytical tools (i.e. bioassays based on the mode of action of substances) in an operational context of chemical quality monitoring (Aït-Aissa et al., 2020, https://professionnels.ofb.fr/sites/default/files/pdf/Biosurveillance_OP/INERIS_2019_LotF_Tache1-2_DRC-20-172902-02808A_EIP-Bioessais_AQUAREF_rapport_final_VF.pdf). In parallel, an exercise was carried out to test different approaches to the processing of data from non-targeted screening analyses and to develop a methodological framework.
