Genetically modified plants for energy production
Description
The report by the Federal Environment Agency examines the use of genetically modified (GM) plants for biomass and energy production in Austria. Special energy crops are currently not permitted in Europe. However, efforts are being made to use herbicide-tolerant and/or insect-resistant maize and rapeseed plants. As the risk assessment is deficient from the Austrian point of view, especially with regard to the effects on sustainable land use and climate, there are bans on the use of many GM plants. There are risks, on the one hand, due to negative environmental effects due to intensification of the cultivation of maize and rapeseed crops and, on the other hand, due to coexistence with GM-free crops. With regard to the greenhouse gas balance, there are currently no significant improvements compared to the cultivation of conventional varieties.
