Description

Zeeland has a number of burg settlements created under the influence of the presence of a fortress from the Carolingian era. It is a circular castle surrounded by an earthen ring wall and a canal. The urban burg settlements Middelburg. Domburg, Oostburg and Aardenburg remain outside the village typology. In the province there are two burg villages: Burgh and East-Souburg.
