Potential additional water demand 1991-2020

Description

The potential additional water demand is determined on the basis of the digital use-differentiated soil map of Lower Saxony 1 : 50 000 (BK50). Only areas whose use is designated as ‘arable land’ in BK50 are taken into account. Additional water demand is the average amount of irrigation within the growing season (April-September) required to maintain a soil water content of at least 40% of the usable field capacity (nFK) in the effective root space (nFKWe). The average amount of irrigation is calculated as the average of the fruit types winter wheat, winter barley, winter barley with catch crop, summer barley, corn, sugar beet and potatoes. The calculation of the 30-year potential additional water demand is carried out on the basis of precipitation and evaporation data provided by the DWD. The 30-year averages were calculated from the daily data. The precipitation is based on the corrected REGNIE product (as of 25.05.2021). Evaporation was calculated by the DWD using the standard method according to FAO to determine the grass reference evaporation on climate station data and then interpolated into the area on a 1 km grid (as of 10.12.2021).
