Overall ecological balance of the winter service of the city of Salzburg.
Description
The length of winter roads, footpaths and cycle paths in the city of Salzburg amounts to around 650 km. Over the past ten years, an average of around 1,000 tonnes of salt, 2,700 tonnes of grit and 187,600 litres of brine per year have been used to support this route network. In 2021, the city and province of Salzburg commissioned the Federal Environment Agency to assess the impact of winter service on the environment. The results of the present study serve as a basis for decision-making for an ecologically compatible design of the winter service in the state capital of Salzburg. The study investigated the influence of winter service on the environmental media air, soil and water as well as the effects on vegetation. Data were provided by the city and state of Salzburg and supplemented by a literature search.
