StrathSpace model for spatial population dynamics of mesopelagic fish

Description

StrathSpace is a spatial population dynamic model which has been developped for mesopelagic fish species living in the North-East Atlantic (Benthosema glaciale and Maurolicus muelleri). The model is both life-stage and length structured. The life stages are eggs, larvae and adults (which considers a maturity ogive to calculate both spawning biomass and reproduction). Individual growth follows the von Bertalanffy growth equation where the asymptotic length (Linf) can be temperature and food dependent and the growth coefficient (k) can be temperature dependent. To simulate movement, the model uses connectivity matrices which were calculated from time-step outputs of the particle tracking model Ichthyop. This requires hydrodynamic model outputs (e.g. NEMO) to model passive transport by currents. Connectivity/transport matrices are computed from Ichthyop runs where 100 individuals are released from the centre of each "water" cell of the defined grid and tracked for the duration of one time step. For each cell of origin, the destination cells and the proportion of individuals ending in them are recorded. When applied, fishing considers length selectivity. Fishing mortality can be either spatially uniform (SUF), or described by a fishing functional response function (type II or III) with effort reallocation. A fishing mask can also be used to restrict areas where fishing is possible or allowed.
