Reporting Water Framework Directive 2010: syntheses on the quantitative and chemical status of groundwater bodies by WFD basin
Description
These synthesis datasets provide information on the quantitative and chemical status of groundwater bodies.
For each body of water the table contains the fields:
-EUGroundWaterBodyCode: Water body code,
-Global_state: Global state,
-Delai_global: target date for achieving a good general state,
-QuantitativeStatusValue: Quantitative status value,
-ValueChemicalStatus: value of chemical status,
-Objective_BE_quant: target date for achieving good quantitative status,
-Objective_BE_chim: target date for achieving good chemical status.
The Water Framework Directive (paragraph 2.1.2 of Annex V) defines good quantitative status of groundwater as follows: ‘Good status is where the level of groundwater in the body of water is such that the average annual long-term abstraction rate does not exceed the available resource of the body of groundwater’.
Consequently, good quantitative status corresponds to the case where the groundwater level is not subject to anthropogenic changes such as:
– would prevent the environmental objectives for waters with associated surfaces from being achieved;
– would lead to a significant deterioration in the status of those waters;
– would cause significant damage to terrestrial ecosystems that depend directly on the body of groundwater;
– would lead to the invasion of salt water. "
The objective is therefore to ensure a long-term balance between the volumes flowing to the benefit of other media or other aquifers, the volumes captured and the recharge of each aquifer. In terms of quantitative management, another objective appears as regards the preservation of uses, and therefore the predominant drinking water use for groundwater.
The results from the monitoring network for a body of groundwater shall be used for the assessment of the quantitative status of that body or bodies of water.
Unlike other types of water bodies, good groundwater quality is based exclusively on the chemical status of groundwater.
Good chemical status is defined by principles equivalent to those defining good quantitative status of groundwater (paragraph 2.3.2 of Annex V to the WFD): " The chemical composition of the groundwater body shall be such that the concentrations of pollutants:
– do not show effects of a salty or other invasion;
– do not exceed the quality standards applicable under other relevant Community legislation in accordance with Article 17;
– are not such as to prevent the achievement of the environmental objectives for the associated surface waters, to cause a significant decrease in the ecological or chemical quality of those bodies or to cause significant damage to terrestrial ecosystems directly dependent on the body of groundwater.’
