Costs and financing of environmental management
Description
This table contains figures on the costs of measures to prevent or control environmental pollution caused by the economic sectors within the Netherlands. Statistics are a European regulation and legally required for all countries of the European Union. Statistics are compiled in a similar way by the countries of the European Union, allowing comparisons between countries.
The main variables in the table are the total annual expenditure on environmental protection in the Netherlands broken down by government, businesses and households. The government covers local and central government. The companies consist of all companies operating in the mineral extraction, industry, energy supply and water extraction sectors plus the companies active in environmental services. The transport and agriculture sectors are not part of this European statistics.
Examples of environmental protection measures include: wastewater treatment for households and businesses, soil remediation, air filtration in industry, collection and treatment of waste from households, noise insulating measures, waste recovery by companies. Costs and investments in renewable energy and energy savings are not covered by the Environmental Protection Expenditure Statistics. Statistics cover the total environmental services provided by the sectors, including the consumption of environmental products (depreciations) but not the production of environmental products themselves.
Environmental costs are further broken down by environmental domains: air, water, waste, soil, noise, nature and landscape, radiation, environmental research and other environmental matters, in accordance with the European CEPA 1 to 9 classification.
The table is compiled according to the international system of national accounts, as set out in the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting, Central Framework and is published annually. The table includes, in addition to the variables investment and environmental expenditure, the variables environmental production, final spending, Intermediate consumption, government transfers paid, government market production, taxes and subsidies, import, export and foreign transfers received.
