Patolu — Indian textiles from the Rietberg Museum Collection
Description
The Museum Rietberg is the only museum for non-European art in Switzerland. The internationally renowned collection houses important works from Asia, Africa, America and Oceania.
An important area of the South Asia collections is the comprehensive textile collection (over 2000 objects) of the former director and India curator Eberhard Fischer. He had collected them during his several years’ stays in Gujarat, India, in 1965/66 and 1968-1971.
The collection of Indian textiles also includes the particularly valuable patolu presented here, which were mostly made in Gujarat at the beginning of the 20th century. These Indian silk saris have been woven in the so-called double kat technique and show typical motifs and shapes such as flowers and leaves, geometric shapes, animals and humans.
In double kat fabrics, the motifs and decors are created by the coordinated colouring of both the warp and the weft threads. The threads are already dyed in the loom before further processing, whereby the parts of the thread that should not be dyed are reserved, i.e. tied off.
