Pollution of surface water with nutrients by atmospheric deposition
Description
An excess of nutrients in the surface water can lead to excessive algal blooms, which, for example, greatly reduces visibility and can make oxygen management problematic.
Nitrogen can be deposited from the air on the bottom and rinsed off to the surface water.
22% of total nitrogen pollution of surface water is due to atmospheric deposition on non-agricultural soils.
Pollution from atmospheric deposition has decreased slightly since 2010.
