Description
The Finnish Meteorological Institute’s lightning locator detects and locates lightnings throughout Finland. The observations include ground flashes with partial attacks and some cloud flashes. However, the observation efficiency of cloud lightnings is significantly lower than that of ground flashes. The most important parameters reported by the locator are time and spatial data. The system also provides an estimate of peak current and positioning inaccuracy. The positioning accuracy (land contact point) is typically less than 1 km for ground lighthouses, but the positioning accuracy varies from one location to another. As a whole, the entire permitted continuum is present in the data up to a maximum value of 25 km. For cloud lightnings, error estimates are typically higher, but on the other hand, their location cannot be precisely determined by a single point (there is no ground contact).
