Aquaculture installations - point of discharge
Description
Aquaculture installations are fish farms, mariculture farms and saltwater-based installations where fish are produced. The type of aquaculture recorded here has discharges into the aquatic environment. The recorded point of discharge is the point at which the discharge takes place. The point of measurement is the point at which measurements are taken. Fish farms are most often freshwater farms that produce fish in ponds. Aquaculture is net cages located in coastal areas in salt water. Saltwater farms use saltwater, but may have ponds on land and thus a production similar to that of fish farms.
Information on aquaculture discharges is regularly reported to the European Environment Agency and the Baltic Sea Cooperation, HELCOM.
