New Aquitaine: radon potential of geological formations — communal data
Description
Radon is produced everywhere on earth from uranium contained in the geological formations constituting the earth’s crust, especially those that are close to the surface. Once produced in the rock, its gaseous state allows it to circulate in the basement, enter and accumulate in buildings.
The factors controlling its concentration in indoor air are multiple and depend in particular on the architectural characteristics of the buildings but also on their use and ventilation. However, the nature of the rocks under buildings remains one of the main determining factors.
Knowledge of the characteristics of geological formations on the territory makes it possible to map areas where radon at high concentrations in buildings is most likely. Such a mapping provides a useful technical basis for guiding the implementation of a radon risk management policy, in addition to information from measurement results acquired in building screening campaigns.
