Areas of national interest for nature conservation should represent the main features of Swedish nature, highlight the development of the landscape and show the diversity of nature from a national perspective. The selection of areas of national interest for nature conservation is made by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency in cooperation with, among others, the county administrative boards and municipalities.
Areas of national interest for outdoor recreation should have great outdoor values due to special natural and cultural qualities, variations in the landscape and good accessibility for the public. The areas should also be or be able to become attractive to visitors from large parts of the country; Maybe even from all over the country and even from abroad. Many different types of Swedish landscapes are to be represented in the selection. Handbook with general advice is published by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency in "Riksinterest för naturvård och friluftsliv. Handbook 2005:5".
