Groundwater recharge Hamburg

Description

Grid maps for groundwater recharge, calculated with mGROWA (FZ Jülich, 2020). The web service shows 4 layers: - Groundwater regeneration of the hydrolog. Year 2019 [min] - Groundwater regeneration of the hydrolog. Year 2018 [Max] - average annual groundwater recharge (1991 - 2019) - mean annual groundwater recharge (1961 - 1990, climate reference period) Description: About a quarter of the rainfall in Hamburg enters the groundwater via the soil and thus forms a significant part of our daily water supply and is an ecological basis for the vegetation and the soil as a water reservoir. The remaining precipitation is mainly determined by evaporation and runoff into the sieve net and into the water bodies. Currently, 136 million cubic meters of groundwater are newly formed in Hamburg area each year with average precipitation (about 770 mm per year). In the dry year 2019, it was only 75 million cbm, which resulted in sharply falling groundwater levels, a lack of soil moisture and drought stress for animals and plants due to partial dry-falling of water bodies. Monitoring the development of groundwater recharge is therefore of particular importance in times of climate change. In addition to climatic changes, sophisticated land and resource management is therefore necessary to counteract the growing urban sealing and increasing water consumption with strategies and measures towards a natural water balance. Data basis and methodology: The grid cell-based water balance model mGROWA of Forschungszentrum Jülich is the basis for the calculation and presentation of area- and time-differentiated grid maps of the various water balance components. In mGROWA, the actual evaporation and the total outflow in daily resolution with a cell size of 25 x 25 m were initially calculated on the basis of the respective precipitation quantities and climatic influencing variables. The calculated daily values were subsequently aggregated to long-term, annual and monthly periods. Thereafter, the total runoff was divided into different runoff components based on site characteristics. In addition to the grid maps of the potential and actual evaporation, the total runoff and the site characteristics, the grid maps of the runoff components of urban direct runoff, leachate rate, intermediate and drainage runoff, as well as finally the groundwater recharge are included in the data compilation. The maps below show the average long-term mean 1961-1990 (climate reference period) and 1991-2019, the wet year 2018 with very large and the dry year 2019 with very little new formation.
