Report: «Salted marshes: Development; ecological Value – Invertebrate Fauna (2002)»
Description
In the context of the sub-project “Ecological Value in Salt meadows – Invertebrate Fauna”, the data collected between 1989 and 1999 on the repopulation of puddle areas by representatives of the benthic and terrestrial invertebrate fauna in various salt marshes in the Jadebusen and Elisabeth external caves were evaluated. Surveys were carried out over a period of up to 8 years in 10 pods, which differ in location or age. In order to be able to place the settlement of the Pütten in a comparative framework, 9 mown or unused reference areas in old salt marshes for up to 7 years were examined, in addition, over shorter periods, in some cases further salt marshes in the Jadebusen were included. [...]
Overall, it is clear from the compiled results that, after a clover in the outer dyke area, the affected area initially loses its previous ecological functions as a habitat for plants and animals of the salt marshes for a period of several years and replaces other functions. In the course of the further development of the Pütte, however, a natural and diverse water system and soil relief is formed, which requires a diverse biotope structure with different small habitats. The higher-age puddles, in which different salt marshes have re-formed up to the upper salt meadow, are once again assumed to be equivalent habitats by the typical invertebrate species spectrum of unused salt marshes. This includes the benthic fauna in Prielen and Schlenken as well as the terrestrial arthropod fauna of the lower and upper salt meadows up to fauna elements of the inland. The overall density – probably due to the diverse habitat structure – often exceeds those in the unused, unloaded neighbouring areas.
