Report: «Proofing Coastal Protection Leybucht: Terrestrial Invertebrate Fauna Hauener Hooge (1995-2002)»
Description
‘Due to the construction measure “Coastal Protection Leybucht”, Hauener Hooge, which had been used as a summer polder until then, was subjected to profound changes. For the eastern part of the Hauener Hooge (“Hauener Hooge – Heller”), the opening of the summer dike as an ancillary provision was included in the planning approval decision [...]. This opening, which took place in autumn 1994, was intended to largely restore the natural saltwater influence in the area and thus, together with the simultaneous abandonment of grazing, to enhance the polder for nature conservation. The mission statement for the former Sommerpolder are non-use-free, low-impact and near-natural salt marshes and prairie structures [...]. The western part, on the other hand, was completely cut off from the influence of saltwater as a result of the drainage.
Since 1982, the NLÖ – Coastal Research Centre has carried out preliminary and accompanying investigations on the “Coastal Protection Leybucht” measure; in this context, the settlement of salt marshes in the Hauener Hooge after the summer dike opening was also investigated from 1995 to 1999. [...]
In the years 1995-97, 1999 and 2002, invertebrate fauna was recorded at some representative sites to document the changes that could be expected as a result of the increased saltwater impact after the summer dike opening and to check the success of the intended salt marsh development. Initial results of these studies have already been presented in interim reports. [...] The focus of the evaluation was on the running beetle fauna as well as on the occurrence and stock development of the salt marshes orchestia gammarellus and some spider groups. This report presents the results of 2002 and explains the changes in fauna compared to previous years. In the second part of the report, the invertebrate fauna of old salt marshes of the Leybucht is presented. [...]
The aim of this work is to answer the following questions:
What changes in invertebrate fauna occurred in Hauener Hooge – Heller 2002 compared to previous years? To what extent has the intended settlement of salt marshes advanced? How does the settlement of old Leybucht salt meadows of different uses with terrestrial invertebrates look like? Is this a development forecast for the Hauener Hooge? Which management measures can contribute to the optimisation of the conditions found?»
