Report: ‘Slags: Effect on benthic evertebrates; Accumulation; Histopathology – Norderney (1996)»

Description

«In the Wadden Sea in front of Norderney was visible through freewashing of a pile of stones that stretches about one kilometre along the main pride. Initial optical inspections of this bulk revealed that the bulk consisted of irregularly shaped round to angular stones, which showed strong signs of corrosion and decay. In addition to clarifying the composition of the rock, the question arises, due to the strong corrosion phenomenon, whether grazing and filtering benthos organisms could suffer acute or subletal damage from the released metals. [...] In order to clarify whether an increased bioavailability of heavy metals is detectable in the environment of the above-mentioned slag smelting in organisms, samples of benthic evertebrates and macroalgae were collected and analysed and evaluated for selected metals. At the same time, histopathological studies were carried out to elucidate possible effects.
