Report: ‘Slags: Comparison Growth slag – natural comparison substrates – Norderney (1988)»
Description
«On structures of coastal protection and port facilities around the western head of Norderney, the vegetation communities (macroscopic marine plants and marine animals) of NA slags and natural building blocks (basalt, granite, sandstone) were examined in a comparative manner. Result: In the lower tide area near the low water line, there are no differences between slags and natural stones in terms of foul density (covering degree) and biodiversity. In the middle and upper tides, sandstone stands out from the other substrates by outstanding dense and species-rich colonisation; Basalt and granite are weaker overgrown, and density and biodiversity are recognizably reduced on NA slag. As a declaration, the following was adopted: Certain toxic properties of slag are not effective in the lower tide due to sufficient flooding time. In the middle and upper areas, on the other hand, negative chemical effects are noticeable as the duration of flooding decreases. They cause failures of certain and reduced densities of other species of organisms, which are severe compared to sandstone, but are not significant in comparison to basalt and granite. Reference is made to the fact that the present study is only indicative in terms of the number of samples and that, in addition to an experimental work carried out by the Norderney Research Centre in 1984 and a qualitative inspection of the Jordsand Association in 1990, it is only the third study dealing with the growth of NA slag on sea coasts.”
