Report: Macrozoobenthos: Lütetsburger Plate – TMAP-Monitoring (1999-2004)»

Description

The “Trilateral Monitoring and Assessment Program (TMAP)” introduced an integrated and methodologically uniform monitoring of the Wadden Sea ecosystem by the three neighbouring countries Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. Against the backdrop of anthropogenic impurities in the Wadden Sea, monitoring aims to detect changes in the natural processes, species richness and community structures of macrozoobenthos. In the course of the implementation of this programme, the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park Administration commissioned the then NLÖ Coast Research Centre in autumn 1998 to set up four monitoring stations for monitoring the macrozoobenthos on the Lütetsburg Plate. To determine the monitoring stations, a transect sampling on the Lütetsburger Plate or the adjoining Ostermarscher Watt was carried out by the NLÖ Coast Research Centre in November 1998 in order to select representative biotope areas for the establishment of the 4 permanent stations. Since 1999, four monitoring stations for the monitoring of the macrozoobenthos have been investigated on the Lütetsburg Plate. Together with the permanent stations in Norderney Islandwatt, which have been in place since 1976, which are serviced by today’s NLWKN Brake-Oldenburg operating station, this provides a continuous eulitoral station profile from the mainland line to the Inselwatt. This profile is supplemented on the sea side by sublitoral permanent stations in the forefield of the island of Norderney, which have been studied by the research institute Senckenberg in Wilhelmshaven since 1978. In addition, since 1994 there has been a permanent station on the Lütetsburger Plate specifically for the monitoring of the stocking, age distribution and area expansion of the mussel Mytilus edulis. This station is part of the Lower Saxony program for the detection of the eulitoral mussel deposits. Previous, nationwide benthosbiological studies on the soil fauna of the Lütetsburger Plate are available from KRAUSE (1952) and MÜLLER (1964). Sedimentological surveys were carried out by MÜLLER (1964) and RAGUTZKI (1978). A sedimentological analysis based on aerial photographs from 1951, 1966, 1975 and 1996 was completed by MEYER & RAGUTZKI (1999). In the context of the monitoring of the eulitoral mussel deposits on the Lower Saxony coast, the area’s shell banks have been mapped repeatedly in recent years (OBERT & MICHAELIS 1989; Michaelis et al. 1995, ZENS et al. 1997, HERLYN & MILLAT 1997, MILLAT & HERLYN 1999). Since 1994, a permanent station for monitoring the stocking, age distribution and area expansion of the mussel has been operated on the plate (MILLAT & HERLYN 1999). Evaluations of this can be found in the final report on scientific accompanying studies on the development phase of mussel management in the National Park “Lower Saxony Wadden Sea” (MILLAT & HERLYN 2004). There are works by WAGENKNECHT (1999) on the fauna of the reefgat and in the context of folding site examinations by Grotjahn (2001). In parallel to the existing TMAP monitoring profile on the Lütetsburger Plate, qualitative and quantitative studies of the macrozoobenthos communities were carried out about 800 m east of the plate as part of planned route connections of offshore wind farms (Steuwer & Grotjahn 2002, 2003). So far, only annual monitoring reports have been prepared from the ongoing TMAP monitoring programme. This report summarises for the first time the results of the studies over a longer period of time. The aim of this thesis is to provide an overall evaluation of the collected monitoring data. In particular, the population development of the eulitoral macrofauna community will be shown and a description of the sedimentological conditions will be made. Hinter_CUTABSTRACT_
