Report: Macrozoobenthos: Variation in dependence on alternating hydrodynamic boundary conditions (1994)»
Description
Studies of cotton fauna have clearly revealed links between biotope zoning and abiotic site characteristics such as sediments. Similarly, it is now known that abiotic site characteristics of wattage areas such as altitude and surface sediment are hydrodynamically determined. In addition, long-term monitoring of Benthos populations at fixed appointment stations has shown that singular hydrodynamic effects – temporarily – can act in the sense of ecological disasters. Therefore, it was obvious to investigate relationships between hydrodynamic influences, in particular the energy-rich sea and flow processes and the dynamics in the populations of the macrozoobenthos. [...]
As part of this work, studies on hydrodynamics took place in the field over a period of more than one year in parallel to the macrozoobenthos study. The biological and hydrographic data were collected in one place to ensure the direct relation of hydrodynamics to the macrozoobenthos. With the help of regression analyses, possible correlations between different macrozoobenthos species with tide water level and sea gait parameters are investigated and quantified by correlation coefficients with regard to statistical quality. Images of various soil and aquatic parameters are used to trace the origin of the analysed significant correlations between hydrodynamics and macrozoobenthos to direct or indirect effects. This is intended to provide initial insights into direct dependencies of the “natural noise” of the abundances of macrozoobenthos on the local hydrodynamic boundary conditions, which are of considerable importance for ecological modelling.
