Report: Macrozoobenthos: Scaling Hydrographic-Macrozoobenthological Interactions (1992)»
Description
‘Area of investigation: Gröninger Plate between Spiekeroog and mainland.
The sampling of the macrozoobenth and the accompanying parameters covered the period from 12 May to 19 June 1992.
For the determination of drift fauna, the muzzles were used parallel to the sampling of the macrozoobenth of the watt soil in the main measuring field over the flooding phase during the intensive weeks. Since the mud nets were replaced each morning and in the evening around the entry of the low tide water, endogenous diurnal rhythms of drift fauna species could be recorded.
During the three intensive sampling weeks, the drift fauna of the flooding phase was recorded for each tide with the aim of first obtaining qualitative information about its composition. [...]
In the studies on the spatial scattering of the abundances of macrozoobenthos, a different temporally resolved sampling pattern of the macrozoobenthos (once a week, every 2. Tide (only in the evening, only in the morning), each tide) for the data of the three intensive phases on the coefficients of variation as dimensionless scattering measures the spatial dispersion of the abundances of selected dominant macrozoobenthos species (Nepthys hombergii, Pygospio elegans, Urothoe Poseidonis, Scolopos poorer) and the variance of this dispersion over time determined. [...]
For studies on the temporal dynamics of the abundances: different time-resolved sampling patterns of macrozoobenthos were performed: once a week, every 4. Tide, every 2 tides and each tide. The data of the three intensive phases the coefficients of variation of the abundances of selected macrozoobenthos species (Nepthys hombergii, Pygospio elegans, Urothoe Poseidonis, Scolopos armiger) were determined over time.
By comparing this statistical quality measure, it can be determined whether the variation of the abundances of the species studied is significantly influenced by the sampling intensity.
Past and future results of such studies are not only of fundamental interest, but are of considerable importance for the design of monitoring programmes, in the Wadden Sea ecosystem and the evaluation and classification of their results. On the one hand, an in-depth and differentiated insight into the ranges of the natural noise of macrozoobenthos populations is possible, and on the other hand, conclusions can be drawn about the natural flexibility of the Wadden Sea ecosystem.
