Description
In the summer of 1980, four miniature estuaries on Borkum, Norderney and the county of Cuxhaven examined the composition and distribution of soil fauna in tide zones and shallow water, with particular regard to the genuine brackish water species.
They largely prevent the formation of natural brackish water zones in the inland sections. These are also contaminated by wastewater on Borkum and Norderney, so that no richer fauna can develop.
It turns out that the extreme poikilohaline conditions in the outer sections of the estuaries join the majority of the expected species. Even in the unencumbered Oxstedt stream, only six can exist of fifteen genuine brackish water species known from large estuaries.
