On the basis of the background and reference values, this project aims to lay the foundations for the development of an assessment scheme in accordance with the requirements of the Water Framework Directive for the assessment of the state of the German North Sea coast. In the areas of transition and coastal waters affected by this, the combination of marine and limnic water bodies produces particularly steep salinity gradients that determine the distribution of organisms, the solubility of chemical substances or the physical nature of the water body. In addition, the tides require large relocations of sediment and water masses.
