Description
“According to the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD); Directive 2000/60/EC) obliges all Member States to achieve good ecological status of their inland and coastal waters. The quality of the water is assessed primarily by biological criteria. As part of the national implementation of this Directive, the Institute for Applied Ecology (IFAÖ, Neu-Brodersdorf) and Aqua-Marin (Northern) were commissioned by the Lower Saxony State Office for Ecology — Coastal Research Centre (Norderney) to carry out a joint characterisation of the German North and Baltic coasts. The Institute of Applied Ecology worked on the Baltic Sea and Aqua-Marin on the North Sea coast.
The first objective of the project was the development (North Sea) or clarification (East Sea) of a typing of the individual coastal and transitional waters of the North and Baltic Sea according to the mandatory and optional descriptors listed in the WFD (Annex II). In a further step, the geological, sedimentological, physico-chemical, hydrographic and biological data should be compiled as characterising assessment bases for the resulting territorial units and verified on the basis of statistical analyses.
For the North Sea (Part A) and the Baltic Sea (Part B), this final report explains the way in which the data is collected and processed for presentation and use as a typing or characterising feature. In a documentation, the development and the result of the typing, the representation of water data in the GIS and the evaluation process are described. The results are made available in the form of databases and GIS files with references to the raw data used.
